Tacos La Mordida

Today I had the lovely pleasure to visit Tacos La Mordida a local food truck here in Albuquerque, NM. I visited hungry and ready to eat something that filled my mouth with various flavors ranging from sweet to spicy, a with protein of course. Tacos La Mordida has a simple but great selection of tacos fitting for any taco lover. Their recipes are true to proper Mexican tacos, yet they also have a great variation of taco styles. These tacos are made with local meats and spices from local Mexican groceries. They make sure to pick the finest cuts of meats ranging from their pork on their pastor to their chicken in their grilled chicken taco. Since I wanted to give a proper review, I decided to have one of each taco on the menu since it wouldn't make me go bankrupt. For both of their Al Pastor and Barbacoa they have a selection of taco preparation preferences, which includes taco, mula, gringa, campechana, and torta. For those that don't know allow me to explain what each of these are. Taco is a basic taco layout that includes soft tortilla, your meat choice, and cheese and spices. The mula is a taco style that involves two soft tortillas with cheese melted with the meat topping of your choice sandwiched in the middle. Gringa tacos are basically a taco with a flour tortilla with melted cheese your choice of meat (typically pastor) with pineapple. Tacos campechana or also better known as campechano are tacos that have a mixture of several layers of flavor and meat. Torta is not so much a taco, but sandwich made with taco ingredients. Separate of their barbacoa and Al Pastor tacos they have a Birria de Res taco, Asada tacos, grilled chicken taco, taco la mordida, and cortra taco. They have simple canned beverages which are Pepsi, Sprite, Coke, and bottled water.

My experience today was lovely. The truck has a very vibrant and simple design making it easy to locate the truck once you follow the location provides on their Facebook page. They are located outside the Sandia Vista Shopping Center, just south of Menaul Blvd NE on Juan Tabo Blvd NE. Once you find a spot to park and walk to the truck you are greeted kindly by the chefs and possibly some Mexican music playing, helping the atmosphere of the food. You can quickly smell the spices and meats coming from the truck, which in my opinion, is always a good sign. When ordering you get the choice of a plate of 4-5 tacos for $10, depending on the tacos you order. Since I told them I was writing a post about the food they gave me a deal when I ordered one of each meat type. But normally I would have had to pay $13 for 7 tacos which is not that bad of a price, especially when considering the flavor. It took them about 5-10 minutes to cook everything all together. Let me add that they do cook the chicken fresh and the barbacoa, meanwhile the Al Pastor is made on a rotating stack (like gyros lamb preparation if you are familiar) every morning. All their tortillas are heated on the grill giving them a nice warmth and texture. Once I received my plate, I popped a seat on a near wall and began to indulge. The plate comes with lime and their different salsas to add to each taco if you enjoy some extra spice and flavor. I would say my favorite was the Birra de Res taco because it was exactly what you would expect if you were familiar with this style of taco from TikTok. It is lamb with pico de gaillo and cheese served with a side of Birra salsa. Birra salsa is a way of preparing the meat that typically takes about 3-5 hours to properly cook. The meat is cooked in a concoction of grilled peppers, grilled onion, chipotle pepper, and other spices. The left-over sauce created from cooking the meat after three hours or more turns into an amazing salsa. The flavor was so strong in the meat and with the compliments of lime and the Birria salsa, was the perfect balance of spice, sour, and meaty goodness. The chicken taco was the safest choice for those that are unfamiliar with spice and tacos in general. I would say my second favorite was the al pastor because of its flavor being infused with the flavors of spice and pineapple making the tacos meat sweet to some degree. The barbacoa is paired with Mexican cheese making it a simple but delicious cheese and meat filled taco. The Asada taco is very familiar because it is carne asada. The steak in this taco is perfectly tender making it easy to eat without destroying the taco in the processes of having a bite. Their costra taco is a taco that has the cheese fried on a griddle, or in this case the grill, that it combined with your choice of meat. I choose pastor because I have a weakness for pork and loved the cheesy goodness with some added salsa. The last taco I tried was their Taco La Moridida but I will not spoil the amazingness of this taco you will just have to try it yourself. With this taco being their special taco hence how it holds the name of the food truck I would highly recommend you try it yourself when you come to visit because it is very special despite the name.

Overall Tacos La Moridida was delicious, and I ended up ordering much more than my first plate. I highly recommend if you find yourself in Albuquerque craving some genuine tacos that are not overpriced and filled with flavor to find this amazingly hidden taco truck. The truck is run by a small family who is kind and loves to invite all kinds of customers to try their food. They love to cook and are glad to serve you however many tacos you desire. The only downside I would say about this place is to be careful with your spice if you don’t like spice and like all spicy food the bathroom the next day might be a little different.

Here are some photos of the food! If you have any questions go ahead and ask. Or follow them on Facebook at Tacos la Mordida.
